  • The Jane Miller

    The Jane Miller

Long lost, she was found three years ago, but the location was never revealed. After a short search this spring, I "re-found" her, but I've chosen not to disclose the location due to the sensitive nature of the wreck.

Diver discovers a capstan in the debris surrounding Arabia.

This small capstan was likely used to trim sails on the night this ship foundered. This image became the centrespread in the Fall 2017 issue of DIVER Magazine, the lead in to and 8 page feature about Tobermory, written by Jill Heinerth and featuring our photos.

    Decompressing

The price a diver pays for time spent at depth... Hanging around in shallower water, shedding unwanted nitrogen.

Presumably, this old ship settled stern-first as this part of the wreck is badly broken up.

Two anchors grace either side of the bow. Unfortunately, their weight is causing stress on the hull.

Presumably the ship settled stern-first when she sunk~

  • Surveying the deck of Arabia

    Surveying the deck of Arabia

The deck is littered with rigging and artifacts, including a bot-bellied stove, gangway and numerous deadeyes. Visit the Tobermory Museum to view dishes and other goodies from this wreck, salvaged before it was made illegal.

And finds it needs some spring cleaning!

  • The bow of the Philo Scoville

The bow of the Philo Scoville

This vessel crashed stern-first into Russel Island near Tobermory, after dragging her anchors. The Captain was crushed as he tried to leap onto Russel Island! And yes, that is rigging from that fallen mast!

This ship hit Bears Rump Island in a dense fog. She held fast for several weeks, before locals set fire to the section above the waterline, in order to salvage the nails in her hull, for local boat building!

    Missing Rail

The missing section of rail... perhaps pulled off by an illegal anchoring, lies 60' off the wreck, in about 160' of water.

Cold, calm water can make for some spectacular visibility!

My buddy Jeff is shooting video at the stern, in about 150' of water. "Clearly", the visibility was pretty nice!
