Southern Sting Ray (Dasyatis americana)

This large ray was feeding on crustaceans in the grassy flats near Halfmoon Caye when I accidentally disturbed it. Another one, close by, but out of the frame, kicked up the cloud of silt in the background. While not dangerous to divers, they have been known to inflict a painful, potentially fatal, sting to unwary swimmers who happen to step on one in the shallows of a beach.
